Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating. The good news: everyone on the mat was once exactly where you are. Here’s what your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at our Gilbert academy actually looks like, so you can show up relaxed and ready.
Before You Arrive
You don’t need any equipment or experience. Wear athletic clothes, shorts and a t-shirt are perfect for a first class, and bring a water bottle. If you don’t own a gi (the traditional uniform) yet, that’s completely fine. We keep loaner gis on hand so you can try a class the right way.
Arrive about ten minutes early. That gives you time to meet a coach, fill out a quick waiver, and get comfortable before class starts.
What a Class Looks Like
A typical beginner class follows a simple rhythm:
- Warm-up, light movement to get your body ready and learn basic Jiu-Jitsu motions.
- Technique, a coach demonstrates a position or move, then you drill it with a partner at a relaxed pace.
- Practice, you repeat the technique until it starts to feel natural. No one expects perfection on day one.
For your first class, you are not thrown into hard sparring. Beginners learn movement, positioning, and the fundamentals first. You set the pace.
You Won’t Be Doing It Alone
The thing new students mention most often isn’t a technique, it’s the people. Training partners are there to help you learn, not to beat you up. Our coaches keep a close eye on newcomers, pair you with patient partners, and answer every question.
Honor, Family, Legacy
Our academy runs on three principles: respect for everyone on the mat, a community that supports one another, and the authentic Gracie Humaita tradition. You’ll feel all three from your very first class.
